About Our Beef

Family

Our family have been farming this land for 4 generations, farming is in our blood. We have a deep-rooted love for the countryside, animals and butchery. Our passion for top quality food and traceability means we’re absolutely determined to offer the very best beef available.

Respect

We respect our animals in life and after slaughter, often saying, 'if we're going to kill this animal, it needs to be killed humanely, butchered perfectly, used entirely, and cooked properly'. We also promote respect for colleagues, we respect the wishes of our customers, and we respect government guidelines.

Animal Welfare

Happy cows produce better beef!

Our approach to animal welfare and husbandry is simply centred on a "beyond compliance" philosophy, emphasising the well-being of our beef cattle. The welfare of our animals is paramount to our business.

Our practices go beyond standard government guidelines, focusing on providing a natural, low-stress life for our cattle, specifically:

  1. Slow Growth: The cattle are slow-grown and allowed to mature at their natural pace, without being rushed. This approach prioritises the animal's natural development.
  2. Environment and Comfort: The cattle have a comfortable living environment. They are given 24/7 access to fresh grass and mineral water and, when brought indoors to avoid bad weather, they sleep on specially designed mattresses. We believe wholeheartedly that happy cows produce better beef.
  3. Pasture-Based Diet; The cattle are grass-fed, contributing to the natural quality of the beef.
  4. Ethical Farming and Local Sourcing: we support ethical farming practices, farming families, and local businesses. We have a deep-rooted love for the countryside, our community, and a strong connection with nature.

Biodiversity

We 'don't fight nature but live with nature' (the farm motto), we are embracing several initiatives to make the land more biologically diverse to create as natural a habitat as possible for our animals;

  • We allow wild non-invasive plants to thrive
  • We use plants and different grasses to establish a natural balance in the soil
  • We're planting more trees and allowing wetlands to flood

Our Breeding Programme

We have developed our breeding programme to simplify our stock rotation and make life more natural for the cattle. Our Salers, Hereford, Belted Galloway and Charolais herds are all thriving. Our ambitious programme has resulted in cost savings that we can offset against rising overheads and labour costs.

Re-Wilding

Over the past 50-60 years, we have been manicuring our farmland and making it look more aesthetically pleasing with tidy hedgerows, tightly mown verges, etc.

Since introducing our new way of farming 'don't fight nature but live with nature', we are reversing what we have done in the past. Our hedgerows are mostly uncut to allow wildlife to thrive, and the cattle enjoy the natural shelter from the north wind. Our wetlands and where the land meets the sea are left completely to nature - the cattle can roam there in dry weather.
